Information We Collect About Users
We collect two types of data about Users:
- Information that you or others provide to us, and
- Technical data passively collected from all visitors to the Essess Website.
Information You Provide
When using the Essess Website, you may provide us with a combination of Personal Information and Non-Personal Information. Personal Information is information that you provide to us which personally identifies you, such as your name or e-mail address. Non-Personal Information cannot reasonably be used to identify you.
Please be aware that even if you update or remove Personal Information that you have provided to us, your Personal Information may be retained in our backup files and archives for a reasonable period of time for legal purposes.
Like most Web-based services, we automatically receive and record information on our server logs from your browser when you use the Essess Website. We may use a variety of methods, including Beacons and Cookies, to collect this Passively-Collected Data. The information that we collect with these automated methods may include, for example, your IP Address, Cookie information, a unique device or user ID, browser type, system type, the content and pages that you access on the Essess Website, and the “referring URL” (that is, the page from which you navigated to the Essess Website).
How We Use Information We Collect
Information we share with others. Your privacy is important. We are committed to protecting information that identifies you personally, where you have chosen to keep it private. While we may share Non-Personal Information, we will only share your Personal Information in the following circumstances:
- When you consent or direct Essess to share the information.
- In the event of merger or sale. If Essess is involved in a merger, acquisition or any form of sale of some or all of its business, Personal Information may be transferred with the business.
- Information we gather through public sources, including information collected by our thermal imaging vehicles. Essess collects data about buildings using thermal imaging cameras mounted to our vehicle fleet. This process is similar to what other companies do in Web-based mapping applications, except that the thermal images we capture are not nearly as recognizable as a standard photograph. We do not currently provide public access to our thermal image database, but nothing in this Policy should be understood as restricting any rights we have to do so. For more information, please visit our Privacy Center
- Building information. Essess strives to provide open and transparent information about home and building efficiency. As a result, we may share publicly available information about homes and buildings that does not pertain to a specific occupant,
Our Data Security and Storage Practices
We work hard to protect Essess and our Users from unauthorized access to or unauthorized alteration, disclosure or destruction of information we hold. Essess follows industry standards and best practices to help protect your Personal Information from unauthorized access, use and disclosure. For example, we store the personal information we collect on computer systems with limited access, which are located in controlled facilities. When we transmit highly confidential information (such as a credit card number or password) over the Internet, we protect it through the use of encryption, such as the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol.
Essess stores and processes Personal Information in databases hosted in the United States.
We Do Not Collect or Use Children’s Personal Information
We will not knowingly collect Personal Information from any person under the age of 13 or target the Essess Website to Users under the age of 13. If we learn that Personal Information has been collected from a User under the age of 13 on or through the Essess Website, we will take the appropriate steps to delete this information.

Aggregate Information means information about groups or categories of Users which does not identify and cannot reasonably be used to identify an individual User. Aggregate Information is a type of Non-Personal Information.
Beacons are electronic files used to count and identify Users who have visited a web page or read an e-mail. Some pages on our Website may use third-party Beacons from Google Analytics. In addition to our use of the data to analyze visitor activity on the Essess Website, Google may use information about a User’s site visit in order to improve its products and services and to provide advertisements about goods and services that may be of interest to you.
A Cookie is a small file containing a string of characters that is sent to your computer when you visit a website. When you visit the website again, the Cookie allows that site to recognize your browser as a previous visitor. Cookies may store User preferences and other information. You can set your browser to refuse all Cookies or to indicate when a Cookie is being sent, or to clear out Cookie information. However, some features of the Essess Website may not function properly without Cookies.
The term Essess Website includes all internet-based properties owned and operated by Essess, including but not limited to mobile and web applications.
Every computer connected to the Internet is assigned a unique number known as an Internet protocol (IP) address. Because these numbers are usually assigned in country- and ISP-based blocks, an IP Address can often be used to identify the country and ISP from which a computer is connecting to the Internet.
Non-Personal Information is information that does not directly identify and cannot reasonably be used to identify an individual User.
Passively-Collected Data is data we automatically receive and record on our server logs from your browser when you use the Essess Website. We may use a variety of methods, including Beacons and Cookies, to collect this information and recognize it as yours. The information we collect using these automated methods may include a User’s IP Address, Cookie information, a unique device or user ID, browser type, system type, the content and pages that you access on the Essess Website, and the “referring URL” (the page from which you navigated to the Essess Website).
Personal Information is information that identifies (whether directly or indirectly) a particular individual, such as the individual’s name, e-mail address, telephone number, Social Security number and financial account number. Personal Information does not include information available from public sources. When Non-Personal Information is directly or indirectly associated with Personal Information, Essess protects this Non-Personal Information as it does Personal Information.
A User is anyone who visits the Essess Website or who directly avails himself or herself of Essess’s products or services. In this Policy, we also use other similar terms such as “visitor” to denote a User. The terms “you” and “your” also refer to a User of the Essess Website.
